Procida

The place for the soul that seeks peace and
relief from all pain. Which asks nothing more than to be fed with enchantment and beauty.

Historic Centre

A walk through the streets of Procida’s historic centre is an experience that feeds the eyes with wonderful views and the heart with overwhelming emotions.

Here, everything seems to be frozen in time, and there are so many places of interest to discover, starting from Terra Murata, the oldest part of the island, a fortified village perched on a promontory 90 metres above sea level, a labyrinth of narrow streets and houses huddled together offering unique views of the Gulf of Naples. We keep following the traces of the island’s glorious past through the picturesque Piazza dei Martiri (Sèmmarèzio), known as “the Terrace of Procida”, the majestic Palazzo D’Avalos and the ancient fishing village of Marina di Corricella, with its beautiful beach, surrounded by the colourful Procida’s architecture.

“Semmarezio, an enchanted terrace where the eyes delight and the body rests. Semmarezio, you sit you sit on the low wall and forget about time, oh yes! Here you just come to waste a little time.”

Inspiring muse for writers, artists and directors, Procida has been chosen as the set for several national and international movies.

It is still remembered as the island of ‘Il Postino’, the last movie performed by the great Massimo Troisi. The picturesque Marina di Corricella was the setting for the tavern where the main character Mario Ruoppolo (Troisi) met Beatrice (Maria Grazia Cucinotta). The small harbour was the background to Mario’s life, the post office where he worked in the movie is in Piazza dei Martiri 8, while the procession was performed at Church of Madonna delle Grazie.  Some of the scenes on the seashore are set in Pozzovecchio, renamed “the Postman’s Beach”.

But there are many famous locations to discover, such as the ones in Lina Wertmüller’s “Francesca e Nunziata”, starring Sophia Loren, including the Abbey of San Michele, Piazza degli Oleandri, the deconsecrated Church of San Giacomo, the Corricella Beach and the Bourbon hunting lodges of Villa Lavina. Memorable film locations abound, from “L’albero delle pere” to “Papillon” up to the hollywoodian “The Talented Mr. Ripley”, which featured international stars such as Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow and Jude Law.
